The ranunculus are blooming – I’ll definitely grow more next year! This week, the inaugural Hope Bouquet went to a mama of multple medically complex kids. She is on the road to therapy appointments multiple times per week, and is always monitoring one of her children’s blood sugar. There’s a low grade anxiety that’s always at work when you know a medical emergency is not a matter of if, but when – an anxiety I’m all too familiar with. When these are your circumstances, it’s easy to attempt to control every single circumstance in your life – because you know you have no control over the one you want to change the most. So, how do we grow beyond this unsustainable way of life? A few verses are helpful to me (to play on repeat) when I feel myself drifting toward a posture of control.
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 KJV
“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” 1 Peter 5:7 NLT
“And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” Matthew 6:27 ESV
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34 NIV
Anxiety is heavy. Having a child with emergent medical needs – and the trauma that comes with that, is hard to recover from. Biologically, when that trauma is triggered our fight or flight system turns on and it is really hard to shift it off. So, if you see a mama overact to something seemingly small know there’s probably something happening underneath the surface. Get curious. How can you help?
